Website design for artists and makers - frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Here is a list of frequently asked questions on web design.

Do we need a face to face meeting?
No, not at all. Phone and email contact are fine.

How long does it take to design a website?
If you have all the information you need for your website ready, we can usually produce an average site in a week.

What do you need from me to design my website?
1. We will need to know how many pages need (home, inspiration, gallery, contact etc.)
2. We will need to know how many galleries you need and how many images you want to show in each gallery.
3. We will want to know if you want to show enlargements of your gallery images.
4. We will ask you if you have any existing artwork that you want to use (logos)
5. We will need content for your website - in other words the text you want to use and the image files for your gallery (preferable in electronic format).

Will I be able to update my website myself?
We can design your site so that you can update it yourself, but we don’t advise it, especially if you have limited experience of computers.  Updating any website can be a time consuming exercise requiring a basic level of computer expertise (don't believe other web design companies say!). Allowing us to do the updating is often a more cost effective solution.

I am not very good at writing - can you write the content of my website for me?
Yes, although there would be an extra charge for this copy writing service.

I already have a website. Can you change it for me?

Changing or adding to an existing website that someone else has created can be tricky as different people program in different ways. We are always happy to take a look at your current website and see if we can alter it for you but usually, it is more cost effective to start again from scratch.

Why should I ask Studio Websites to design my website for me?
1. We are specialise in designing websites for artists, makers and art groups.
2. All the feedback we get from existing clients is very positive – our sites are admired for their apparent simplicity but powerful web presence.
2. We are a small company, so you get a very personal service which is friendly and patient.
2. Our prices are very competitive.
3. All our websites follow the principles of excellent website design - and they look good too.

What are your principles of good web design for artists?

- Simple navigation systems (our websites are easy to use)

- Minimal use of background images (the art and content should do the taking, not the website design)

- Quick to appear (no annoying flash animations that take for ever to download and add nothing to the visitor experience)

- Easy to read text fonts

- Excellent graphic design (ensuring a positive impression)
